Photo of the Month | June 2021

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

~Psalm 46:10

Every time I see the splendid wildlife we have here in Alaska I give glory to God in the Highest. His creative power is revealed in each species by unique physical characteristics that are pleasing to the eye but also by the behavior of different animals.

Nearly every day for a week this small group of caribou have roamed both sides of the highway in the area of Kenai River Flats. They stroll in single file behind the obvious leader of the group as they munch their way up and down the flats. Many drivers pull off the road at the scenic lookout for photos or just personal enjoyment. All week long I passed them by as I drove to town on errands but this day I stopped to enjoy them. I know that they will migrate out of our area soon and this opportunity will be gone until next year.

I took a few photos and videos as I watched them pass in front of the viewing stand. I could sense that the leader was getting itchy to cross the road. Sure enough, as soon as I took my last photo, she bolted up the ditch and stopped to check for traffic. I said a quick prayer to their safety as she decided, “ALL CLEAR!” and bounded across the road.

She was right. No cars were close enough to hit any of the group and they made the crossing in safety.

Now, how did she know this? I believe it is a learned behavior and that is why she is the leader. It is God-inspired instinct. He cares for the animals He created for our enjoyment. He cares for even the smallest sparrow, yet we are more valuable to God than a whole flock of them (Luke 12:7).

Be encouraged by God’s Word to us. He is a Good God! He set us free by providing freedom and salvation through belief in His Son Jesus. His Word is clear:

There is one God, the Father, by whom all things were created, and for whom we live. And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created, and through whom we live.

~1 Corinthians 8:6

If you have fears or lack confidence today over something going on in your life, think about the Caribou. They trust their leader to guide them safely through a danger zone. Who is your leader today? Trust God! He never fails us. He knows the way and cares deeply for each of us. He knows what is best for us if we just place our trust in Him. Pray for His guidance and He will draw near. Then as He guides you through difficulties, don’t forget to thank and praise Him!

I will praise You, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things You have done. I will be filled with joy because of You. I will sing praises to your name, O Most High.

~Psalm 9:1-2
